Mike Flannery and Andrea Lee are the proud new owners of Oceanside English Academy, They purchased the school in late 2011 from Luke Pendak, who had operated it under the school’s previous name – Comox Valley International College.
Mike and Andrea are world-travelers, writers, teachers, coaches, and lovers of food and life.
Although they are both Canadian, Andrea’s parents came to Canada from Taiwan and Andrea was born in Ottawa, Canada’s capital city. They fell in love while living and teaching ESL in the smallest prefecture in Japan – Tottori Prefecture in the south, near Kyoto. That was the summer of 1992.
We understand the excitement of visiting another country. And we know how wonderful it feels to belong to a new community, spending time soaking in the culture, food, people and surroundings.
We’re so delighted to create the best possible boutique experience of natural English here in beautiful British Columbia. We bring our love of food, the outdoors, and the surrounding areas to every student, paying attention to their particular likes and dislikes.
Because we don’t aspire to be a big school where students become numbers, we commit to knowing every student’s name! You will never feel forgotten, and we know you’ll never forget your experience.
Both Mike and Andrea are experienced teachers of adults, and believe in flexible, compassionate instruction and a team approach. We favor immersion over the use of textbooks, although texts have their place.
With a strong grasp of Mandarin, Japanese and French, Andrea has a unique perspective on language learning and provides input to our passionate team of instructors. And Mike, well…he has a way around food and life that just makes things fun.
